Max McMann is the leading man in the novelDevil's Attorney. He is so greedy and evil that money is more important to him than his mother and conscience. He gets a job as an attorney because of his approach to living. The more money he gets the better his defense gets, and he is ready to say anything to get the judge to release the criminal. He spends all of his money on himself, on his accommodations, and on the chance of learning new kinds of fraud.
